Last night we welcomed over 60 attendees to our second Knockdown Rebuild Seminar & Workshop. Guests were treated to refreshments at the Sandringham Yacht Club, whilst hearing about residential bayside design considerations. We are proud to announce our Beaumaris project has this week been awarded the High Commendation for Best Medium Density (Dual Occupancy) category by the Bayside City Council.

The design and build team saw to the creation of two stunning and unique, homes on this two street frontage, prime site in Beaumaris. Distinct features were designed for each home commencing with the exteriors; the wave / fin form timber paneling to one home and a layered roof line to the other. It is not obvious these two are part of a dual occupancy project and are instead identified as individual homes. Clients commissioned Fiona Austin for the interior design, with Lowe Design & Build undertaking architectural design, town planning and meticulous build.

On Saturday 2nd December we held the launch of the Lowe Foundation, celebrating more than 30 years of commitment to community well-being with a gala evening at Woodlands Golf Club. The event reinforced the strong connection between Lowe Design & Build, and the local community, in particular, our two flagship charities Outside The Locker Room and Camp Awakenings.

Guest speakers were Jake Edwards, former AFL player and Founder of ‘Outside the Locker Room’ (OTLR, outsidethelockerroom.com.au) as well as Michael Weiser and Sandi Sieger, Program Directors of Camp Awakenings (campawakenings.com.au).  OTLR is a welfare and education program for youth of local sporting clubs. The program looks to empower, educate, and support young adult participants both on and off the field. Camp Awakenings provides Year 9 participants the opportunity to develop and harness methods and skills to counter the challenges faced by today’s youth.

When Lowe Design & Build was established in 1984, it was at this time Brian Lowe thought it equally important to be an active and involved community member and so signed up to the Chelsea Rotary Club. Brian’s contribution to the community was plentiful. In 2011 Kingston City Council awarded Brian Lowe with the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award for his service to the community and for setting up a trust fund through the construction business that raised over $1,000,000 to fund various local schools, facilities and programs.

“We are a company who has always been dedicated to excellence and giving back to the community and being involved is part of what we do.” states Brian. “We are proud to introduce the Lowe Foundation and look forward to continuing this commitment to our community.”
With Matt Lowe now at the reins for Lowe Design & Build, his focus is to continue the company culture of community support and involvement. The Lowe Foundation currently supports numerous programs many of which focus on youth development, mental and physical well-being and cancer research.

We are proud to announce the magnificent home at Mt Martha, designed and built by the Lowe team has won the 2016 HIA Eastern Victoria Custom Built Home in the $1 – $2M category.

The 2016 HIA Eastern Victoria Regional Housing awards were held in September at the Mercure Portsea Resort, before a crowd of local industry leaders and peers from across the Eastern Victoria region.   Clients Roger & Lisa had a vision to build a simple and functional home, practical for everyday living, with the lavishness of a holiday house. Maximising the views without compromising the comfort was paramount.

The home is located, high above the woodland above the Esplanade with a breathtaking view. The brief was to create an outdoor area sheltered from the strong winds, and maintain focus on the sea views, within a built environment.

Thrilled with the results, client Roger mentions: “It was a pleasure to work with Lowe, with great attention to detail in every aspect. We absolutely love our home!”

A large number of residents in Bayside suburbs are lucky enough to live on a large block. If you are one of these people, you might have considered developing your block at some point. It may involve separating your block and selling the backyard or demolishing and building two or three new properties. Whatever you decide, research is crucial.
The local planning scheme in your area will need to be reviewed to ensure you are able to develop in the first place. Consider things like minimum site coverage, frontage, set backs, private open space or even heritage restrictions.

Checklist:

  • Check your Certificate of Title:  This will list your full site area & easements.
  • Council Planning Scheme:  What restrictions apply to your block and/or suburb?
  • Compare Similar Developments:  What’s the best use of space? What are the recent sales figures for your area? Consider your best and worst development scenarios.
  • Speak to a Qualified Professional:  A builder, architect, surveyor or development adviser is your best source of information. This will ensure costly mistakes are avoided.

Splitting a large block into two properties is a great way to downsize, especially for downsizers.  Reducing the maintenance and size of your home, plus benefiting from the sale of a second or even third property reduces the financial burden of building a new home.
